When insufficient bone volume is diagnosed intra-orally, before dental implants are considered, most clinicians advise a bone augmentation to their patients. The overall succes of horizontal, and in particular vertical bone augmentation is quite unpredictable, surely in the hands of insufficiently trained or experienced surgeons. Moreover, for patients this extra surgery is often costly, and a time consuming extra step in their oral rehabilitation. Furthermore, the morbidity of these surgeries is mostly high.
Therefore, the use of ultra-short implants (<6mm length) can be an added value in the portfolio of every implant practice.
This lecture will deal with all facets of ultra-short implants, including a thorough scientifically background and the presentations of several day-to-day cases.
After the lecture every surgeon should be aware that ultra-short implants are not only a valuable alternative for several types of bone grafts, but also are an established way to convince more patients to restore lost teeth with implants.
