Effective management of a specialized dental practice: Ethical Marketing Approach

Prior to undertaking any elective, ‘cosmetic’ dental procedures such as dental implant in the
aesthetic zone , it is vital for the treating dentist and/or dental team to discuss the merits and
drawbacks of all viable options. It is important that the patient understands what the consequences
and limitations of treatment are likely to be, and what the potential failures could entail later in his/
her life.
On the other side, dentists need to be aware of the existence of heightened expectations in this
group of patients. While it is the duty of the dental team to improve their skills to meet the pink and
white aesthetics in dental implant cases, the team need to be cautious about accepting patients who
have unrealistic ‘cosmetic’ expectations. Where possible, cosmetic or aesthetic dental treatment
should be provided which is minimally destructive and, in the long term, be in the ‘best interests’ of
the patient.
In addition to all the above, the dental team need to understand that running a dental practice is
considered a small business project and the same rules applies. The dental team is required to work
on growing the business in addition to the usual routine work in the business. This lecture will aim
to offer few marketing strategies tested and found to be useful in effectively promoting and
managing a specialised dental practice.
It is also hoped that the lecture will provide clear definitions of some commonly used terms such as
‘ethical marketing’, ‘ethics’, and ‘values’, which are often used in association with the marketing,
planning and undertaking of supposedly ‘cosmetic’ dental procedures in addition to suggesting few
tips and hints the dental team can use to convert patient needs into demands and get better
marketing results in cosmetic dentistry.
